Iran presently has 130 universities, corresponding to a university density of 1:560,000 inhabitants, placing Iran as no. 9 of 22 in the MENA region. Iran also is a country with 3 multi-campus institutions, counting ca. 230 regional centres. These are often listed as individual centres of educaiton, but that would be incorrect as hardly any of these can by itself be equated to what is otherwise required to be called "university". Iran do well on the world ranking of Webometrics, 40 institutions are listed among world's top 6000. The following 5 are ranked among the world's top 2000: University of Teheran on 987; Isfahan University of Medical Sciences on 1035; Tehran University of Medical Sciences on 1135; Isfahan University of Technology on 1924; Ferdowsi University of Mashhad on 1932; and Sharif University of Technology on 1977. In this respect, Iran is with 30% of its universities on this list, ranked 8 of 22 in MENA. Iran is clearly among the countries in the MENA region which has the best balanced system of higher institutions, a good university density, good rankings, and good geographical distribution.
