Babol



Babol, Iran

City in northern Iran with 190,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) about 20 km south of the Caspian Sea, in the Mazandaran Province.
The economy of Babol is centered around a number of small-scale manufacturing enterprises, and is also the commercial centre of an agricultural region. The main products of the region are rice and fruits.
Babol is connected by road to the provincial capital Sari, and Amol, and there is an airport nearby. The seaside town of Babol Sar, 20 km north, is a popular holiday resort.
The main landmark of Babol is the summer palace and garden of Shah Abbas 1, dating back to the 17th century. In addition, Babol is known for its paved streets, large bazaars, attractive houses, and small but interesting mosques and funeral towers.
There is a university in Babol Sar, founded in 1975.
