Batman



Batman, Turkey

City in southeastern Turkey with 250,000 inhabitants (2003 estimate) in a region of broad plateaus, on the Batman river, which joins the Tigris river 25 km south. It is the capital of Batman province with 460,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
The economy of Batman is dominated by the region's oil industry. In addition to oilfields, there is an oil refinery in Batman, and a 515 km long pipeline to Iskenderun on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition there are a number of modern industries, like the production of beverages, processed food, chemicals, furniture, shoes, machinery and transport equipment. The agriculture of the region specializes in the production of cotton.
Batman has road and rail connections with Diyarbakir 100 km west and Siirt 100 km east, and an airport.
