Corum
City in north-central Turkey with 170,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), lying on the edge of a fertile plain. It is the capital of Corum province with 600,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
Corum is a famous for its hand-spun and woven products; in addition copper utensils and leather products central. It is also the main trading centre for the surrounding plain which produces cereals, fruits, tobacco and sugar beets.
Corum's rise to importance came from its strategic location for the traderoutes from central Anatolia to the Black Sea coast. Modern Corum is connected by road to Kirikkale 250 km west, Ankara 300 km west, Samsun 150 km northeast and Sivas 300 km southeast.
The landmark of the city is a 13th-century mosque, and it has several Ottoman structures.
