Djer
King of Egypt, 3rd king of the 1st Dynasty, ruling from around 3040 BCE.
The Egyptian historian, Manetho, sets his reign to 57 years long, which would involve its end at about 2980-85 BCE. Modern research, however, has set his reign as little as 2 years. Manetho gives him the name Iti or Athothis.
From his reign there are stories of many battles against the Libyans in Nile Delta. Accounts of battles against Nubia has been proven to be before his time.
He was buried at Abydos in a tomb with a wooden floor. Next to his grave is the one of Merneith, mother of future King Den. His tomb would at least from the time of the Middle Kingdom 2000 BCE become revered as the tomb of Osiris. At his tomb, an arm wrapped in linen and decorated with bracelets and gemstones. The arm was disposed with, and may well have been of Djer himself.
There is also evidence to his existence at tombs at Saqqara.
According to accepted king lists, he was preceded by Aha as king and succeeded by Djet.
