Malayer



Carpet from Malayer, Iran

City in western Iran with 180,000 inhabitants (2003 estimate) in the Zagros Mountains. It lies in the Hamadan Province.
Malayer is the centre of a rich agricultural region, and the city itself has a number of small-scale manufacturing companies. The most valued product are carpets.
Malayer is connected by road to Hamadan 100 km north and Borujerd 100 km south.

HISTORY

Malayer has existed at least since Sassanid times (3rd-7th century CE).
1956: A large program of industrialization brings strong growth to Malayer.
