Mugla
Town in southwestern Turkey with 45,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate) on a small plain 20 km from the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Körfezi) near a tributary to the Büyük Menderes river, at 630 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Mugla Province with 720,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
The surrounding region produces citrus fruits, cereals, cotton, tobacco and vines. The nearby coastal region has become very important in tourism in recent decades.
Mugla has excellent road connections to other urban centres; Bodrum is 100 km west, Fethiye 120 km southeast and Aydin 100 km northwest.
Mugla has one of the best city plans of modern Turkey, but there are also several beautiful 18th century houses with tiled roofs, beaked chimneys and ornate doors. The main landmark of Mugla is the 14th century Friday mosque.
HISTORY
14th century: Becomes an important city in the Turkmen Mentese principality.
1425: Annexed by the Ottoman Empire.
