Shibin al-Kawm

City in northern Egypt with 190,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), in the Nile Delta, along the Shibin Canal, which is fed by the Damietta branch of the Nile river. It is the capital of Menoufia governorate with 3.2 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 1,532 km².
Shibin al-Kawm is a trade and administrative centre of the surrounding agriculture, producing mainly cotton, flax and cereals. Its industries produce textiles and cigarettes.
Shibin al-Kawm is slightly off the main highways of the Nile Delta, but is better connected to other urban centres by rail. Tanta is 27 km north and Cairo 80 km south.
Shibin al-Kawm Institute is an affiliate of al-Azhar University of Cairo.
