MEIDUM:
The enormous mastaba

Huge mastaba at Meidum, Egypt

Huge mastaba at Meidum, Egypt

The mastaba next to the pyramid of Snefru is one of the most impressive of all of Egypt. It is a superstructure, perhaps recreating a holy mountain or a raised underground, containing numerous independent graves. Later mastabas were individual graves.
Its wall are more slanting than usual with mastabas. The only mastaba of a measurable scale, the Mastaba of al-Faraoun in South Saqqara, has near-vertical walls. The slanting walls may have been a reflection of the shape of the pyramid.
