TELL EL-AMARNA:
Tomb of Mery-Re 1

Tomb of Mery-Re 1, Tell el-Amarna, Egypt

Mery-Re 1 was the High Priest of Aten and father of Mery-Re 2, who also has an important grave here. As this was the highest position in society, of course he could afford a great tomb. The result is the finest tomb of all at Akhetaten.
The wall-decorations here are partly in good condition, with the original colours intact. As usual, the figures have been defaced by religious fanatics, both Christians and Muslims.
The decorations deal mostly with Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti, but Mery-Re appears in several of the images. A few scenes show Mery-Re, in prayer and when he was appointed high priest.
Most interesting are the paintings showing both the layout of the Great Temple and of the city itself.
