MARRAKECH:
Agdal garden

Agdal garden, Marrakech, Morocco

Agdal garden lies right south of the Royal Palace, stretching for about 3 km. The area was constructed as a retreat during summer heat. Its history dates back to the 12th century, but the present layout is mainly from the 19th century.
Around the garden are numerous wells and underground channels, bringing water in from the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. In its centre, there are several pools, with one pool far larger than the others making up its centre (top photo). Along its southern end, there is a summer pavilion, with the mountain tops of High Atlas in the back.
Entrance is free, open Fridays and Sundays 8.00-17.30.
