TETOUAN:
Museum of Arts

Tetouan, Morocco

Tetouan, Morocco

Tetouan, Morocco

Located right in from Tetouan's nicest city gate, the el-Okla, the Moroccan Arts Museum has an interesting collection of traditional crafts and ethnographic objects. The building was originally an arms bastion, and interesting in its own respect.
Right on the outside of the gate is an artisan school. For those into mosaics, it may be of interest that Tetouan has a slightly different technique in developing zellij. Here, the pieces are shaped before being burnt, whereas the standard method is to burn, then give each piece its form.
The pictures show (top to bottom) a rich family's coffin; elaborate embroidery on male dress; model boats and decorative basket lids.
Admission to the museum is 10dh, open daily except Saturday and Sunday 9.00-11.30 and 15.00-18.00. Friday 9.00-11.00 and 15.00-18.30.
