GHAR EL MELH:
The port

The port of Ghar el Melh is sadly not of pirate origins, it was the main naval base of Tunisia in the 19th century. Still this may be considered as a continuation. The early 19th century was the time when piracy finally was rooted out in North Africa. And of course the navy made used of the local knowledge of the sea and ships.
It is quite large and fortified at the two outward sides. The opening out to the sea could hardly have allowed more than one ship passing at the time.
