Old town
Kebili, Tunisia

Kebili, Tunisia

A few kilometres into the oasis, the old town is hidden. It has not been inhabited since 1980, but a few buildings have now been turned into simple museums and cafes.
The open square was formerly a slave market, where slaves from West and Central Africa were traded, largely for the domestic market. In the middle of the 19th century, slavery was abolished in Tunisia.
The old town has a few nice spots, and is a good example of the traditional view of how the desert town should look like.
